JANŽURKA

Celovečerní dokumentární portrét o významné československé filmové a divadelní herečce Ivě Janžurové, natočený pohledem její dcery, Theodory Remundové.

In this documentary portrait, Iva Janžurová – an icon of Czech film, television, and theatre – is seen through the sensitive eyes of her daughter. Through the prism of the close relationship between the protagonist and the director, not only Janžurová’s admirable professional activism in the present but also her past career and personal life in a contemporary context are newly revealed.

The observational style naturally intertwines with the staged scenes, in which, for example, photographs from Iva’s childhood, excerpts from private correspondence, or other arranged situations from the past come to life. In their joint meetings, the daughter and her mother reflect on specific methods when performing theatre and film roles, on self-presentation, but also on human nature itself.

The essential element is Janžurová’s ordinariness, which she has retained despite her privileged position, her humanity and closeness to the ordinary spectator, and her ambition to perform at her best even in most remote regions of the Czech and Slovak Republic as well as on the boards of the National Theatre. We follow a woman to whom a large part of Czechs relates through film, television, and theatre stories and the characters she has embodied.
